In last Friday's episode of #MakeFitHappen, we had on the show the inspiring Yona Signo, Trainer, Mentor, Coach and Founder of Empowered Virtual Services Philippines, a company that develops the Filipino virtual professionals to be FIT to the demands of the global virtual workspace.
Working virtually or work-from-home, doesn't come without challenges. The quick shift brought about by the pandemic, caused a 'whiplash', among workers. For one, balancing between work and your life, has become nearly impossible. We are clocked-in for the whole day, pasted to our desktops. We forget to take needed breaks, breathers in between. The challenge becomes all the more difficult for working women, who have to juggle between their own work, and the home-study requirements of their kids, and managing the home. In addition, the challenge to stay motivated and focused throughout the work-day is a challenge too. Admit it or not, the temptation to lay back and spend the whole day chilling with Netflix, or the more-than-frequent "refrigerator-trips", can be a distraction for most of us. We may not have foreseen these problems shifting to this work environment, but Yona and her team did. In coping with these challenges, she shared very practical tips:
One, "communication is key". Communicate with your family members the requirements of your work, so that you may work around a schedule. Communicate with your boss, clients and colleagues your agreed upon time schedules, so that expectations are set and met, and you still get your me and family time.
Two, "create a schedule & plan ahead". Prioritize tasks, plan activities, make time for breaks in-between so that you are relieved of the stress of having to juggle so many things at the same time. Taking a break to de-stress, breathe, and relax are just as important as it keeps your well-being in check, and improves your productivity.
Third, "respect". This comes multi-directionally. Employees respecting the work schedule and requirements; employers, clients and colleagues respecting each other's time; and family members respecting your work requirements. Respect goes a long way!
Being "FIT" for Yona means being fit of MIND, BODY & SPIRIT. Our physical health allows us to cope with the physical challenges of the work, but our minds and spirit can get us through the challenging time. And the approach to fitness not just in our physicality but also in the mental and spiritual health, translates to a boost in your well-being.
Indeed an inspiring Filipina. Cheers to Yona! Cheers to the Modern Pinay!
