In last Friday's episode of #MakeFitHappen, we had an energized discussion with Muay Thai Coaches & Athletes Marc Antoni Cabacungan and Ronald Arthur Davis of Sprawl MMA and Quezon City Muay Thai Academy.
During the program, we learned that Muay Thai is originally from Thailand and is also known as the art of 8 limbs - making use of 8 key body parts for striking - 2 fists, 2 shins, 2 elbows and 2 knees.
Muay Thai is both a martial art and a combat sport that follows a set of rules, and being of Thai origin, puts a premium on mutual respect among Muay Thai fighters. Thus, coming into the the sport with the right mindset of control is of utmost importance at it will help the individual reach their full potential.
Muay Thai is a full-body workout, and has good cardiovascular exposure thus, it is a good regimen for those aiming a more fit lifestyle. An hour's worth of Muay Thai session, can help burn as much as 500 calories. And putting in more effort through regular schedules and dedicated routines can help you achieve your fitness goals faster. It also teaches discipline, control, respect, mindfullness which are useful in our everyday lives.
Muay Thai is very versatile in that it can be taught to children as young as 6 years of age and as old as a person is and physically capable of performing active actions. It also does not discriminate on gender, as people of all genders - males, females, and LGBTQUIA members can echieve success in the sport. As it is a strenuous workout, full disclosure of physical body health to your coach or gym admin is important so that they may assess the level of activities and progression suitable for you. If necessary, a consultation with your medical doctor may be necessary if you are suffering from some medical conditions.
The Muay Thai community in the Philippines is a fast-growing population as it cultivates a sense of teamwork and cooperation among members.
This being said, Muay Thai is something that one can try and who knows you may just be a Muay Thai champion awaiting to be discovered!
